LG WebOS UHD TV

LG has introduced a new WebOS TV line-up along with other HDTVs in Indian Market at the India Gadget Expo 2014. The new series has Full HD CINEMA 3D and Smart LED Screen integrated on WebOS platform with an intuitive Launcher Menu. The new WebOS Cinema 3D TV is available in 42,47,49,50,55,65,79 and 84 inch size options in the price range from Rs 78,900 to 17 lakhs.

Setup, design and features

The setup process is guided by an animated character called ‘BeanBird’ to help you connect and understand new features and functions of the Smart TV. It features an intuitive user interface which is both easy to navigate around and refreshingly uncomplicated. It has a left-to-right scrollable menu called the Launcher letting you switch amongst all forms of content, be it broadcast TV, VoD movies, games, apps, or media files stored on USB or external  devices. The Launcher also packs 3D world, web-browser and LG App Store. You can also customize and re-ororder the Launcher in your home screen to access the apps you use the most and easily switch between them, pick up where you left off on your most recent apps, or select something new. Live Menu allows users to browse channels, view recommendations and search for content.

Wherein most TVs have inbuilt speakers, here speakers are externally placed in vertical facing forward alongside the TV and delivers 70W of sound. The 2MP camera is located on back panel, and when not in use it is hidden making the design uncomplicated. All other I/O ports are housed at back panel on left side.

Great visuals

To review the TV, we fed the TV with various SD and Full HD content and the picture quality produced was impressive. The UHD TV incorporates In-Plane Switching (IPS) panels boasting a resolution of 3840*2160, offering excellent color accuracy and consistently superb picture quality with minimal color distortion irrespective of the viewing angle. The TV also employs Tru-Ultra HD Engine Pro that supports 4K Motion Estimation Motion Compensation (MEMC) wherein all UHD content appears lifelike and free of motion blur. Faraway objects also look detailed and accurate.

When we fed the TV with the UHD content, the picture quality delivered was excellent with true to life colors. Each shade and color displayed was natural and real. Black levels are deeper and truer. It also has the ability to upscale standard HD and Full HD content to near 4K quality eliminating visual errors like picture distortion, colors fading out, and noise while up scaling. When we tested the TV with 3D content, the 3D effects were a pleasure to watch. There was just slight blurriness during fast moving scenes in 3D which can be annoying at times when watching action packed animated content. You can also adjust the degree of 3D with the 3D control feature. The glasses supplied are light, battery-free and comfortable to watch. However 2D to 3D conversion was not much powerful.

The multichannel surround sound system by Harman Kardon produces room-filling booming sound enhancing your movie watching experience. The supplied magic remote works well during point, scroll, gesture or voice commands. The Smart TV is also ready for future as it integrates 4K HEVC decoder that will be mainstream standard for 4K video compression. The TV comes loaded with some apps like Skype, Hungama etc.
