Packed with stunning front and rear cameras with a wide range of features that add beauty to your selfies - Ashok Pandey

Last month we reviewed HTC Desire Eye which was designed for selfie lovers, and now we have Micromax Canvas Selfie that is also made for selfie lovers but available at a comparatively lower price. The smartphone features high resolution 13MP front and rear cameras. It boasts dual-LED flash at rear and single at front, so that you can capture your selfie even in low light conditions. The camera app has tons of stunning features to enhance the beauty quotient of the snap you are going to capture as well as add more effects to make it more beautiful even after.

Looks splendid with unique curved top and bottom panels

It’s completely different than other Micromax smartphones due to its unique design, though it may remind you of the Sony Ericson Xeria Arc that also has curved bottom panel. It is available in two colors – pearl white and sapphire blue. We received the white unit for the review which has the gold metallic edges and buttons. The smartphone gets a faux leather finish with stitches across the edges that are completely free from smudges and scratches. The back panel is non-removable and the entire body is made with durable plastic that feels good.

The lightweight smartphone can be handled in one hand easily, thanks to its smart dimensions which hold the 4.7-inch HD IPS display, protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The screen is crisp, producing rich colors and has great viewing angles, allowing you to share the screen with your friends and family while watching videos or playing games. With the 720p resolution, it is bright enough but suffers a little in direct sunlight.

Runs on KitKat with customized UI over it

Canvas Selfie runs on the Android 4.4.2 (Micromax has promised a Lollipop update) with a custom UI over it. The UI looks inspired by iOS and MiUi. It has an app drawer and the app icons and widgets are spread across the home screen. It may feel a little difficult to understand the UI for the smartphone users, especially for them, who have not used an Android phone before. You can also download and install alternate launcher as per your taste as it comes with themes and features a store to download new themes.

As its name “Selfie”, Micromax included high resolution camera with a soft front-flash. The 13 MP front camera has a LARGAN lens and a Sony sensor that can capture detailed images and enables you to remove all the blemishes from your face while capturing the image. Moreover, you can enhance the face beauty even after capturing the snap using the default camera app. It lets you apply several effects including teeth whitening, reduce dark circles, and remove oil etc. The autofocus camera easily detects a face, in near realtime, and captures images with warm colors and great details. Even the low light pictures are quite good using the front camera with flash.

The rear 13 MP camera is equally brilliant in taking good images in both day and low-light conditions, with dual-LED flash. Both cameras are also capable of 1080p full-HD video capture and the results are satisfactory.

Combined with powerful hardware

Micromax Canvas Selfie is equipped with 1.7 GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6592 processor, 2 GB RAM, Mali-450 GPU and 16GB of internal storage space. You can expand the storage up to 32 GB using microSD card but there is only one tray that accepts SIM and microSD. You can either use the phone as dual-SIM or single-SIM phone with microSD card. The tray has only two slots- one is made for dual purpose, nano-SIM or microSD card and the second slot accepts only micro-SIM.

The smartphone delivers a smooth performance. You can do multitasking and enjoy some heavy games as well without any hick-ups or lag. It is backed with a 2,300 mAh battery that provides the juice to run longer. In the moderate usage, it can last for more than 9 hours and in our video test (playing video at full brightness and volume over Wi-Fi) it lasted for 4 hours and 16 minutes. You can easily enjoy the smatphone for a day without any interruption.

The speakers produce loud and crisp sound, though the sound can get muffled when the phone is held in landscape orientation.
