The year 2020 began with lots of joy, but then COVID-19 came and we all locked ourselves behind the doors. Its been months, but we still fear to go out and taking extra care whenever we have to go out. This pandemic taught us many things, we are sanitizing our hands again and again. Though personal hygiene was in out nature, but not this much. As now we are sainting almost everything including vegetables and phones.

Recently, Signify launched the Philips UV-C Disinfection system. This system looks like a microwave. This uses the UV-C radiation technology, which has been validated to effectively inactivate SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The system is easy to use, low maintenance and portable, which disinfects frequently touched objects and personal items.

UV-C Disinfection System comes with two light sources in enclosed space. Depending on the type of object, it takes approximately two to eight minutes for disinfection. It also depends on the object the size of the object.

Philips UV-C Disinfection System comes in three variants of 10 litres, 15 litres and 30 litres capacity, priced at ₹7,990, ₹9,990, and ₹11,990, respectively.

Inside the system, there is a grill, whatever object you want to disinfect, you keep that on the top of it. Then according to the size and type, you can select the time and click on the start button. It comes with a LED display that shows the timer.

Using the Philips UV-C Disinfection System, you can disinfect personal, electrical items, packaged food products, milk packets, fruits and vegetables, etc.

Effective disinfectant

To disinfect the item/object, just put that inside on the grill, close the glass front door, and choose the timer depending on type and size. Then click on start and the system’s inside light will switch on for that particular time period to disinfect the object. Once the disinfection is completed, it will notify you with a beep sound. Thus, you can complete other tasks rather than waiting in-front of the system.

If you are disinfecting key rings or any other small item, it would take two minutes only. While disinfecting products like mobile phones, bottles, wallets, power bank, etc. you can set 3 minutes timer. Other items which are large in size including laptop, iPad, tablet, books, etc. you can choose 5 minutes time to disinfect. For even larger size item, set the timer for eight minutes.

While disinfecting small items, better to put as many products you can at a time, this will save your time as well as power consumption. Just keep in mind to increase the timer for more than 5 or 8 minutes if you are disinfecting more than three products at a time.

According to the literature, the minimum 611 Micro Joules/cm2 @ 254 nm irradiance required to treat the coronavirus. The Department of Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, has found that the Philips UV-C Disinfection System’s output is >2100 Micro Joules/cm2, meaning it won't leave even a single virus alive on your object.
