Nothing is more dangerous than a lost iPhone with a compromised password, and Apple is handling this issue wisely. Apple is now working on a new "Stolen Device Protection" option that will require users to enter the passcode and complete Face ID biometric authentication to access sensitive information on iPhones.

Stolen Device Protection provides a smart additional layer of protection.

"As threats to user devices evolve, we work tirelessly to create powerful new safeguards for our users and their data." iPhone data encryption has long been the industry standard, and a thief cannot access data on a stolen iPhone unless the user's passcode is known. Stolen Device Protection provides a smart additional layer of protection in the rare circumstances where a burglar can see the user inputting the passcode and subsequently steal the device," said an Apple spokeswoman.

The new "Stolen Device Protection" feature adds an extra layer of security

The new Stolen Device Protection feature, which adds an extra layer of security, will be handed out to all eligible iPhones via the iOS 17.3 update. When the iPhone is unconnected to the user, it must be authenticated using both passcode and Face ID to use it, alter the associated Apple ID, or factory reset; otherwise, the phone enters stolen device protection mode. There will also be a one-hour delay if someone tries to remove and reprogram the present Face ID.

According to the Wall Street Journal, a new scam involves attackers spying on or befriending victims to steal their iPhone passwords. With this new functionality, thieves cannot do anything with a stolen iPhone other than sell it for parts.

iPhones also have a similar feature called "Lost Mode

iPhones also have a similar feature called "Lost Mode," which allows users to declare an iPhone as lost in iCloud. This operation turns off the device, communicates its current location with the owner, and allows the owner's contact information to be shown if located.

On iPhones running the beta version of iOS 17.3 or subsequent models, users can enable the new Stolen Device Mode by going to Settings > Passcode and setting the Stolen Device Mode. The same option will be available to all eligible iPhones in the coming days. This will be an optional feature consumers must enable to secure their iPhones.
