Interestingly, India’s second oldest IT magazine, PCQuest turns 25 before I do! Our regular issues mostly revolve around a forward looking approach towards technology and cover all that is hot and happening in the ever evolving world of technology. Somewhere in the midst of doing all that, we tend to forget all that has gone into making it what it is today. This special issue is special in many ways. Apart from the anniversary celebrations, this is an issue which looks back for a change to celebrate and acknowledge various elements which shaped up the IT industry. We are talking about the impact which technology has had on our lives.

Steve jobs once famously said “Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”

This chapter looks back and salutes the companies which have been at the forefront of development of technology. IT companies have invested billions of dollars into inventions and development of the IT industry and the products. Today, the IT industry stands as one of the most potent employers with work force running into millions. It hence becomes important to understand their contribution and the impact of their labour on our lives. There is a lot to learn from their achievements and their way of thinking and implementing their ideas.

If the world was to face another disaster, and I had an option like Noah of”old testament” to take things along with me, THE COMPUTER would definitely be one of them. But then again, I have the option of a desktop, laptop, tablet, and smartphone, infact much more…… argggh.
