New Update

Until now, high speed storage drives commonly known as solid state drives (SSDs) were available with low storage capacities, to the tune of 256 GB or so, but with data growing exponentially in both size and quantity these days, it has become imperative for storage manufacturers to respond with products that can meet both these requirements.

Like Samsung's other 840 SSDs, the 840 Evo comes with triple-core MEX controller and uses triple-level NAND flash which enables the SSD to store three bits of information powered by 1 GB DRAM.

We put the SSD to real time testing, and on Crystal Disk Mark the drive got a sequential speed of 517 MB/sec (read) and 502 MB/sec (write). On HD Tune Pro, the drive gave us a maximum speed of 396 MB/sec which is higher than the Seagate 600 SSD which we reviewed earlier this year.

To test the SSD's real time capability, we created a setup with two 240 GB SanDisk SSDs and created a RAID configuration to complement the high storage Samsung 840 EVO and prevent any possible bottlenecks. We transferred 10.5 GB assorted to the SSD and the resulting speed of 171 MB/sec is one of the highest that we have come across. Also the cost per GB of Samsung 840 EVO is Rs 47 which is three times less than that of the Seagate 600 SSD which offers Rs 132 per GB.
