The original series had an open ending in season 4, which concluded in 2004. Later, season 5, which released 12 years later, concluded the journey of Jack. And much like the series, a Samurai Jack video game has been announced after 16 years. The first Samurai Jack video game came in 2004, titled Samurai Jack: The Shadow of Aku.

The upcoming game is titled Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time. The announcement was made through an exclusive trailer given to IGN

According to IGN, Battle Through Time will be a hack and slash game developed by Soleil, a Japanese studio, in partnership with Adult Swim Games. The Japanese studio is comprised of ex-Ninja Gaiden/Dead or Alice devs who also worked on Naruto to Boruta: Shinobi Striker. The video game’s story will be written by Darrick Bachman, who was also a lead writer in the animated series’ team.

In the short teaser trailer that has been released, we can see that Jack will have various weapons at his disposal, and in one instance, even a gun. It also seems that time travel will be featured in the game; Jack appears as his older, bearded and gruffy (like 2017’s final season) as well as his younger clean shaven self in the trailer. The video game also seems to capture the animated series’ art style quite effectively.

For now, there aren’t a lot of details, except for the loose release date of Summer 2020, which is quite near. It was also announced that Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time will be available on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC. More details might be released at PAX East 2020, where Genndy Tartakovsky and Darrick Bachman both will be present on the Adult Swim Games panel.
