Sasken has offshore development centers across multiple branch offices and
there is the constant need for on demand delivery of backend infrastructure for
their business team, with reduced complexity and optimal cost. Additionally,
from the IT implementation point of view, optimal utilization of discrete
servers, overcoming obsolete infrastructure, handling interoperability of
applications, and solutions is an area which could not be left unattended in any
case. Also, the demand for reduced backup window, reduced investment in
real-estate, challenges of carbon credits are key issues that led to the
development of this project. The complete server infrastructure was virtualized
using VMware virtual infrastructure and as a result 20 new additional virtual
servers were provisioned for enterprise ERP/SAP. Sun Enterprise Storage system
(SAN) was used to take the backup at all times which migrated all the data
stored on individual servers to a High availability Storage. This resulted in a
lot of power savings. The key benefits that were gained included reduced
physical servers and complexity thus resulting in real estate savings, ease of
management, and overall reduced costs. Boot of the entire servers is done
through SAN there by reducing the time to recover the hardware failure to just a
couple of minutes.
