Seagate, one of the reputed name in the storage device industry has announced its high storage mobile hard disk drive specifically meant for tablets. With the tablet market set to overtake PC market in the coming years, it is apparently clear that brands like Seagate will have to shift their focus towards the portable computing products and with Ultra Mobile HDD 500 GB, Seagate has taken a step in that direction.

This Ultra Mobile HDD enabled Android tablets the support laptop like storage capacity, which was unheard of till now. The high level storage offered does not compromise on speed. "Coupling an ultra-thin, high-capacity HDD with software designed to optimize integration into tablets at a value-add price has allowed us to deliver a truly ground-breaking solution, enabling our partners to re-imagine the mobile device," said Steve Luczo, president, CEO and chairman, Seagate.

The newly-engineered 2.5-inch drive is just 5mm thin while weighing in at a mere 3.3oz- about the same as a light bulb. Featuring up to 500GB of capacity, it delivers the highest areal density available in a small, ultra-thin form factor while supporting over 100,000 photos, 125,000 songs or 62 hours of high-definition video and movies, as per the company release.

In terms of technical specs, the drive supports SATA 6 Gb/s interface and maximum data transfer speed rate of 600 MB/s, the drive runs at 5400 rpm.

With the introduction of 500 GB drives for tablets, one can assume that the portable computing device will gradually get all the laptop like features and until now only 128 GB storage option was available on tablets.
