When running out of space, an external portable hard drive still seems like
the most practical solution for storing data. Portability and speed remain the
two key factors to consider when buying an external HDD. When talking of speed,
the new 2.5'' FreeAgent GO performed quite brilliantly. At first sight, it looks
like many of the other portable HDDs available in the market. But the
benchmarking tests proved quite the contrary. It gave an average read speed of
21.1MB/s in the HD Tach benchmark and 26.8MB/s in the Everest disk benchmarks,
which are quite good and better than a number of other such devices available.
The machine used to test it was a Pentium 4 extreme edition at 3.0GHz coupled
with 1GB RAM. We managed to transfer an 800MB video file in less than 50 seconds
and a 1GB folder in 55 seconds which is again, quick!

The FreeAgent GO is as silent as vacuum and doesn't gets heated even after
prolonged use. The device supports USB 2.0 interface and apart from data
transfer it also gets powered from the same.
The look of it is neat and feels quite solid. The dotted lights on the
surface pulsate to indicate data transfer. Another thing worth mentioning is
that, it is fitted with a shock absorbing system which ensures the safety of
your data from jerks. As with many portable drives even this one is available in
different colors
Bottomline: A good buy for people looking for a
portable data storage solution.
