When you buy an external hard drive for your storage and
backup needs, you are tied with the interface that it comes with eSATA,
FireWire and in most cases, USB 2.0. This doesn't allow you to switch to a
higher speed or a different interface later as the drive's casing doesn't
support this. So if your office PC has a USB 2.0 interface and your home PC
supports eSATA or FireWire, then you'll have a tough time using the same drive
on both machines. The FreeAgent GoFlex family of storage devices from Seagate
come in to your rescue. These provide you the flexibility to adapt to newer
interfaces.
We received Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 2 TB external hard
drive for review, which has USB 2.0 as the default interface. This lets you
upgrade to a faster interface to increase your transfer speeds when paired with
another GoFlex Desk desktop adapter. All you need is to change the dock of the
hard drive with one that supports USB 3.0 interface. A GoFlex Desk Desktop
adapter for USB 3.0 interface will cost you Rs 3,500 which delivers upto 10
times faster speed compared to USB 2.0.
For performance, we used the same set of tests and machine
as used while evaluating the Hitachi external hard drive. To transfer one GB of
data from the PC to this drive, it took 57 seconds, while the reverse took 17
seconds. The drive clocked an average transfer speed of 20.2 MB/s and 17 ms
access time with the HDTune benchmark.
Price: Rs 13,500 (3-year warranty) |
Bottomline: While the drive's performance with USB
2.0 may not be earthshaking, the advantage you'll have is the flexibility of
upgrading the interface and even switch between different interfaces just by
changing the connectors. That definitely gives this drive an edge over
competition.
