The GoFlex1 TB NAS from Seagate lets you store, access and backup files to a central location. It connects to your Wi-Fi router so that you can connect to it wirelessly. The software included, Seagate Dashboard, can backup upto 3 PC or Mac based machines.
A USB port is also provided in the storage system. You can share a USB printer, through this port, with all the system which has access to this network storage. Also if you are running out of space, then you can connect an additional USB hard disk, in this USB port.
Setting up the GoFlex NAS is pretty simple. Just connect it to a WiFi router, and take any machine with a WiFi adapter and install Seagate's Dashboard software on it. The software will automatically detect the NAS box. Plus, you can also access the NAS over the Internet from anywhere.
You must install software provided by Seagate on every system that would be accessing this NAS. Every user would then get access to a private folder on the NAS. Apart from that, all users will see a public folder, a printer folder, and a backup folder by default. The functioning of these folders is self-explanatory.
To check the data transfer speed we tried to copy data to the NAS from a system over the wireless network. It took 1 min 43 seconds to transfer 1GB of data to the NAS.
Then we tried to download data from the network storage. The time taken in the process was 1 minute 13 seconds.
You can also access the network storage without using the software. For that you need to enter the IP address in the browser window and you will get the web interface, from where you can access the shared folders.
Seagate Home does not provide its own backup software. It comes with Memeo backup service, which is a 30-day trial. After that you can go for Seagate Share Pro subscription for $19.99 a year.
You can upgrade it to any number of users but upto 5 people or computers can access GoFlex Home, making it useful in a small environment.
Bottomline: A great product to quickly setup
a shared storage environment for a few
systems.
