In our last issue we did a mini-shootout on the various e-mail clients available. This time we explore this area furthermore with a comprehensive analysis of e-mail recovery tools. Today, e-mail has become an important part of our lives for all kinds of communication, like the phone used to be. This heavy usage means that if you lose your mailbox because of a virus or file corruption, you are in for some major inconvenience. In order to retrieve lost mail, there are many tools available.

Unfortunately these tools are not free, and you will have to shell out between Rs 1000-2000 to get them. Here we help you choose the best one to retrieve your lost mail, incase a disaster strikes. A large number of mail users either use Outlook Express or MS Outlook as their mail client. That’s why more mail recovery tools are available in the market for these two programs. In this shootout we have looked at a total of seven mail-recovery tools, in which six can recover mail from Outlook Express and one can repair and recover deleted mail from MS Outlook. To test these tools we have taken working mailbox files from both programs, and tampered with them using hex editor. Then we used each tool on these damaged files. We also checked out the features offered by each recovery tool. We tested the tools on an IBM notebook having P4 1.6GHz mobile processor, 720 MB of RAM and Win XP with SP2.
