More than three years after its first announcement, Sony has finally shown the revised versions of the PlayStation 5 system. The updated models, which mostly concentrate on the design and size, are standard practice for the PlayStation product lifecycle.

Every dimension of the new PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition versions is smaller. According to Sony, the new 2023 models are 30% smaller in volume and 24% lighter than the prior ones. Here is a chart that shows all the modifications to date since there have been a few minor tweaks throughout the years as a result of smaller heat sink sizes.

What changes have been made to the new smaller PS5?

Sony has also changed the design of the removable panels. Now, instead of two parts, there are four parts, the top two parts have a glossy surface and the bottom part is matte. As before, Sony only sells the console in white, and other colored panels must be purchased separately.

The company will offer all matte black as well as the previously announced Deep Earth Collection colors (Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue and Sterling Silver) in early 2024 for $55. One panel opens access to the new Ultra HD Blu-ray disc, which is now removable on new consoles. You can also buy the disc separately outright and plug it into the Digital Edition console to get the disc functionality or if you’re existing disc fails for some reason. The Ultra HD Blu-ray disc is sold separately for $80 and is only compatible with new consoles.

Other details

The new console also comes with a new stand. However, this stand only works to support the console in landscape mode. If you want to place your PS5 vertically, you now have to buy a separate vertical stand for $30. This new stand works with all PS5 models, both new and old.

Internally, there is only one change to the console and that is the increase in storage. The PS5 now has a whopping 1TB of storage, up from 825GB on the previous model. All other internals seem identical based on the numbers Sony has released so far.

Smaller PS5 price and availability

The last thing that has changed is the price. Although the standard model will still set you back $500, the Digital Edition received a $50 discount and now costs $450. The new versions will go on sale in November in the US and worldwide in the following months. Current models are sold while supplies last.
