New Update

With more and more manufacturers announcing their tablets across varying display sizes, a lot of Indian vendors have started to launch their own tablets as well. With the success story of Micromax in phones, vendors are now trying to do the same in the tablet category. Earlier we reviewed the EZ-Stylepad, which belonged to one of the Indian vendors, which fared pathetically in our review. Now we were able to get our hands on SP tablet that is being sold in India by SP Tech solutions, which is priced at an attractive Rs 18,000.

Looks & ergonomics: The SP tablet is an exact replica of the Apple iPad. It shares the same dimensions, but instead of the metallic back, this one features a white plastic back with the SP logo on it. The device has a single circle button just like the iPad on the front and this works as the back button for the SP tablet. On the right side is the slider power switch with volume keys. On the bottom is a 30-pin port, much like the Apple products along with a 3.5mm audio jack and a microSD card slot.

Display: The SP tablet has an 8-inch TFT LCD resistive display with a resolution of 800 x 600. The resistive display required us to do a touchscreen calibration on initial setup, but the response is simply pathetic. In-fact it was one of the worst touchscreens we have tested. Although, the display is superb with good brightness and great contrast, the tablet is a huge letdown owing to its pitiable touch response.

Hardware & software: The SP tablet has an impressive hardware specification on paper that matches up to most existing tablets in the market. It has a 1GHz processor with 512MB RAM and 4GB inbuilt storage. In terms of connectivity, it has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The tablet runs on Android 2.2 and comes with the usual Android user interface.

Multimedia: The SP tablet does not have a camera on-board which is a slight letdown. In terms of audio and video playback, the tablet was a good performer. The sound output was another letdown as even the dual speakers were just good enough for personal listening.

User interface: The tablet runs on Android 2.2 and features no UI customizations. In spite of such powerful hardware, the user interface is a pain to use. Navigation lags every now and then, whereas the applications taking time to launch. Although, the onscreen keyboard has large keys as per the display size, the poor touchscreen hinders the user experience. Interestingly, when we did a factory reset of the device, the device became worse! The Wi-Fi kept turning itself off.

What makes the tablet worse is the battery backup. Even though the manufacturer claimed it has a 3600mAh battery, we were not able to get more than 2 hours of backup with the device.

Bottomline: The resistive touchscreen is the biggest reason for the tablet to perform so pathetically. Even though it is bundled with a leather case + keyboard accessory, we would suggest you stay away from this tablet.
