Search engines often are the starting point of many of our adventures over the Internet. It would be fair to say that without search engines, the Internet would have become nowhere near as popular as it is today.

But for all their greatness, the traditional search engines have their weak points too. The primary amongst them is that they index text-related file formats (HTML, PDF, DOC etc) only. And this is inspite of the fact that a large amount of content over the Internet is in other formats such as audio and video files, binaries etc. As the competition in the search domain is heating up, it was only a matter of time before the big players moved their attention to this segment of the market.

We take a look at two of these categories-image and video search-and the important players in each of those. Read on.
