This RDBMS from Gupta Technologies is meant for small to mid-sized businesses. The version 9.0 is Linux (SUSE and RedHat) compatible and you can move the database between Windows and Linux by adding the name of databases in sql.ini configuration file under Linux installation folder. Linux compatibility is the major addition in 9.0.There was one CD for the installation for Windows (server and client) that took less than 100 MB of space. Complete installation took less than three minutes.

The console consists of customizable workspace divided into the left and the right pane. The left pane displays database administration tools and server-related properties such as tables, stored procedure and statistics. The right pane displays the details. We created a workspace for our database server ‘PCQ’ and created tables and views. The creation was simple and wizard driven. One advantage is that SQL Base lets you communicate with COM+ based components-a boost to developing distributed applications. The statistics monitors server-related properties such as I/O operation, locks and total transactions, useful for database administrators. Graphical representation of the same is also possible. The audit feature helps to track user-related activities. It can track users who are logged on, tables being accessed and attempt to violate privileges. The alarm feature provides a safeguard against violation of server conditions such as inactive processes and low cache. There is a ‘backup and restore’ option, but backups can only be done in the hard disk. You cannot back up to an external storage device. Additionally, disk partitions can be created for database server that can increase the performance.

Database server has a GUI that shows real-time stats

There are scheduling manager and event manager tools to automate tasks such as backup and updating the statistics. There is SQL talk, a GUI that lets you run SQL queries, connect or disconnect cursors and store and run procedures. Connectivity administrator lets you edit the sql.ini database sever and client configuration file. SQL base 9.0 supports a variety of database drives such as JDBC type 4, ODBC, OLE DB and .NET. DBError describes, in detail, the database errors.

The Bottom Line: Small businesses will find it easy-to-use, as it’s a single interface for database administration, monitoring, server and client configuration. The relational database would be more powerful if E-R diagram and importing other database option were there.
