Syncing in Vista

New Update

Now-a-days, the biggest challenge for those who carry multiple devices around is to sync data among them. Let's assume that you have a home PC, a Network server with some shared folders, a notebook, a palmtop, an MP3 player and a smartphone. One has to distribute files to each device individually, and the same goes for synchronizing the data. So if you want to have a common repository of songs in your MP3 player and your notebook, then conventionally you have to copy the files manually and whenever you add or delete the songs from one device you have to do the same in the other device as well. This process is quite tedious.

The upcoming release of Windows Vista comes with an in-built application, called SyncManager, to do all this automatically from a single console. Do not confuse it with ActiveSync, which is a specific application to manage and monitor only your MS PocketPC based handhelds. SyncManager, on the other hand, can synchronize a larger range of devices.

Start the SyncManager from the Control Panel. This will open up the manager window and show an icon on the task bar

This window will list all the devices like MP3 players, PDAs, mobile phones, connected to your PC. It also shows all offline network folders

To mark a folder for offline use, open the folder and right click it; and then click on 'Make Available Offline'

When all folders and devices are in place, click on the 'Sync' button to synchronize them with your PC
