The Semi-Finalists: Manipal Hospital's HIS Implementation

Manipal Hospital implemented HIS to switch over from legacy system and integrated it with SAP, DMS, Drug Database & Pharmacy Software, resulting in 90% reduction in information flow time and revenue increase by 12% - 14%

Manipal Hospital is a part of the Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG), which pioneers in the field of education and healthcare delivery. With its flagship quaternary care facility located in the heart of Bangalore city, five tertiary care, nine secondary care and three primary care clinics across four states, today Manipal Hospitals successfully operates and manages 4,400 beds and caters to more than 1.7 million customers a year.

Before implementing the HIS, there were several non-standard manual processes that ran independent of each other. All activities that are related with a hospital, be it managerial, clinical or related to some other department, were dealt using manual procedures. This involved lots of paperwork, leading to a lot of delays and mistakes. Data processing & analysis of information were done on Excel sheets. Stake holders like doctors, nurses, administrators, management, etc. were not able to get accurate and reliable information. Patients were also facing troublesome situations. There were long waiting times for patients at registration counters, reports collections, discharge process, etc due to manual processes. The legacy software with no integration worked in silos resulting in lack of mandatory functionalities. Moreover, there was no support for the legacy HIS applications. So, there was a need of HIS application that can be switched over from the legacy HIS. It would be able to provide support to each and every stake holders of Hospital and can overcome the above mentioned challenges effectively.

The Implementation

With the help of Clintics, Manipal Hospitals implemented the web based TrakCare HIS Application. It was integrated with Cache Database, CMPMedica Drug Database, Prodigious Pharmacy Software and SAP FICO & MM. Integration of real time SMS & mail alerts was done with HIS solution. Key technologies that were used in this project are CSP, Javascript, CSS, IIS, ASP, VB, Cache Database, SQL database, and IE browser. Implementation support was provided by Clintics and E4E.

The Impact

HIS implementation at Manipal Hospital, Bangalore automated the processes and standardized it by implementing 26 modules of HIS solution. Over 1000 processes were automated. Patient care improved. Revenue leakages were addressed to a larger extent. There were improvements in patient care, operational efficiency and reduction in paperwork. It was estimated that there was almost a reduction in information flow time by 95%. According Manipal Officials there was an increase of 12-14% in the revenue of the hospitals. Digitization of 1 Crore pages of past records (more than 15 yrs) was done and then it was integrated with HIS for real time access.
