This is an ever-existing market and will remain so.

Especially in the Indian context, with the existing power situation, you can’t

think of setting up a computer without a backup UPS. Another factor very

particular to this market is that it remains more or less stable, as these are

usually rugged and durable devices.

For the branded UPS market, APC was the clear winner for the

fifth consecutive year. People, especially corporates, chose it for its quality

and reliability. At the runner up position, TVSE has dislodged last year’s

winner–Tata Liebert. The UPI for TVSE has more than doubled this year, and

quality has emerged as the reason for this rise in ratings. Other players in

this market include Elnova, Numeric-2000, etc. Interestingly, Elnova seemed to

be doing well during our survey last year. However, we observed a fall in its

ratings this year. In fact, three players– Tata Liebert, Elnova, and Champion–who

were in the User’s Choice Club last year, haven’t made it this year.

UPSs have a big market in India, no thanks to the power

conditions in the country. Local assemblers or developers dominate the Indian

UPS market. These are regional entrepreneurs operating out of a city, with some

locations in other cities as well. With so many people manufacturing UPSs,

quality becomes a major concern when buying. The respondents in our survey also

indicated quality as the major criterion for buying a UPS. Service and support

was the next major issue among corporates. Since this segment of buyers needs

large UPSs to backup all systems, and can’t do without power, come what may,

these two issues become important when buying a UPS.

Last year, APC had a huge lead over the others. Even the runner up was a

distant second with a UPI of 27. This year, TVSE has jumped from last year’s

21 and third position to a UPI of 58 and runner up position. Is APC’s position

in danger? We’ll see who has more power next year.
