Weir Minerals India - Data Center Setup

The Problem: Weir India had their datacenter at Bangalore that served about 300 users from Minerals & Services unit of the company. After the acquisition of BDK Valves in Hubli, and upon doing audit of the IT infrastructure Weir found that average age of IT assets was 6-8 years and network connectivity was unstructured. Weir needed to rebuild their IT infrastructure from scratch. The company evaluated options to build data center in Hubli, have an outsourced one or have a central consolidated datacenter at Bangalore.

The Solution: The option of a consolidated data-center at Bangalore was found viable, considering the current requirements and future business expansion plans.The consolidated data-center in Bangalore is providing IT services for 4 units in Bangalore, Hubli (Weir BDK) and regional offices in rest of India with about 700 IT system users.

The Result: The company is saving huge costs for maintaining the additional data centers. Also the hardware assets are most likely underutilized, as excess capacity must be maintained to handle spikes in demand for each individual data center, wherein a consolidated data center the resources are utilized optimally.
