Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB HDD

The 7200 RPM HDD comes with the SATA 3Gbps interface and a whopping

32MB cache. href="http://pcquest.ciol.com/content/hardware/2009/109020101.asp">Western

Digital has a lineup of mainstream drives called the Caviar Blue,

high performance drives named Caviar Black and Caviar Green (low Power)

. These specs make this href="http://pcquest.ciol.com/content/hardware/2010/110020102.asp">HDD

suitable for high-performance home and business computing. as it can

handle data-intensive applications. However, using the HDTune

benchmark, the Black hard disk failed to amaze us with its performance.

It was barely able to display average transfer speeds of 86 MB/sec with

an access time of 13.8 ms. The HDD achieved a burst rate of 105 MB/sec

which is decent. Compare these scores with the Seagate 's high

performance drive, the Barracuda XT 2TB HDD, reviewed in Feb 09, which

achieved an average transfer rate of 101 MB/sec over an access time of

14.1sec.The Seagate Disk is equipped with a SATA 6Gbps interface and a

colossal 64MB cache. The Seagate HDD has a cost per GB of about Rs 8.5

whereas the WD Caviar Black HDD comes at Rs 9 per GB. This difference

in price would be important when you purchase drives in bulk.

Otherwise, it may not make much difference.

Bottomline: 1TB storage capacity seems to be the only thing

going for this HDD.
