Artificial Intelligence (AI) which used to be limited to academia has finally come of age to enter our daily lives. Asimov’s stories may no longer be in just the books, we are soon going to experience them in our daily lives! While home automation devices are not commonplace in India, they will be widely so in the next few years.

It is estimated that by 2022 the home automation market will generate revenues of almost 53 billion dollars. While owning a home automation system such as the one in Mark Zuckerberg’s home is yet beyond the reach of most ordinary homeowners, Zarvis as the home automation system in Zuckerberg’s home is called, shows the potential that AI-driven home automation systems have.

A smart home that recognises its members

Expect home automation systems to be more integrated and much more connected in 2019. This means that such systems will allow users to control a wide array of devices with the help of facial and voice recognition technology. Security systems at home will recognize and will selectively unlock doors to allow people in. Voice-based assistants will recognise the user and personalize the house based on preferences of that user.

In 2019, the interplay between AI and home automation will become more intimate as AI-powered home automation systems learn the habits of those living inside a home and gradually anticipate what their owners want without being prompted. Such AI could even make recommendations based on which people’s daily routines become optimised.

AI May Automate Threat Detection and prevention

Home automation systems that are powered by AI and are connected to IoT devices will play a greater role in keeping homes safe. This is all the more important today as all member of a family spend a considerable amount of time outside the home. AI-based home automation systems may be used to automate threat detection; this means that such systems can be programmed to automatically tell users there is a treat when certain events occur. Furthermore, such AI systems may be so smart that they may warn homeowners if they perceive something out of the ordinary. In effect home automation technology next year may proactively alert homeowners of threats.

A home that takes its own care

As home automation systems work seamlessly with appliances such systems will even be able to diagnose the health of appliances and if needed, let residents know if something needs attention. For example, ACs will inform the user when to clean the filters and it will inform the service centre at the same time, saving the users’ precious time. Robotic floor cleaners will keep the room clean when the owners are away.

The Need to Not Operate Anything

Home automation systems in 2019 will grow smart enough that they operate everything inside a home based on the preferences of residents. An example of this is an AI-powered automation system will be able to judge when a member of a household is likely to reach a house and make preparations for his or her arrival.

Such preparations may include brewing a cup of coffee or turning on an air conditioner in a particular room. What makes this technology all the more intuitive is that the home automation system need not be prompted of a person’s arrival, rather it will be able to judge the time someone is likely to reach using an app and make preparations accordingly.

AI and home automation are ideal partners because they can change for the better how ordinary people live. The partnership between these two technologies is still in a nascent stage and in the future, both will be even more intimately linked. Greater intimacy between these technologies will result in AI-powered home automation systems recognising the moods of those who occupy a house and responding appropriately. Clearly, the marriage of AI and home automation will grow more in 2019 to make the lives of people more enjoyable and effortless.
