Xbox Series X backwards compatibility

The new generation of consoles is almost upon us. And again this time one of the main concerns for the consumers is Backwards Compatibility. While PlayStation is on a bit of a rocky boat regarding the issue, Xbox seems to have come out ahead. In a recent blog post, Microsoft announced that the Xbox Series X Backwards Compatibility will support thousands of already released games, as compared to PS5’s 100 (they do however claim that they will be testing more games, numbering in thousands).

In the blog post, Microsoft said, “With more than 100,000 hours of play testing already completed, thousands of games are already playable on Xbox Series X today, from the biggest blockbusters to cult classics and fan favorites. Many of us in Team Xbox play on the Xbox Series X daily as our primary console and switching between generations is seamless. By the time we launch this holiday, the team will have spent well over 200,000 hours ensuring your game library is ready for you to jump in immediately.”

But this isn’t all. The older games will be able to take full benefit of the Series X’s new hardware. Microsoft claims that Xbox Series X Backwards Compatibility will allow the games to “run natively” on the console and will use the “full power of the CPU, GPU and the SSD”. The post also says that this means that games will be able to give even better performance because of this.

Another important takeaway from the announcement was that the old games will also be able to run in Full HDR on the new console with “zero impact” on performance. “In partnership with the Xbox Advanced Technology Group, Xbox Series X delivers a new, innovative HDR reconstruction technique which enables the platform to automatically add HDR support to games,” the announcement reads.
