Is your PC Y2k ready? How about your software? This tome
from JD Consulting helps you find out. It also helps you assess the extent of Y2k
readiness or otherwise of your apps, and suggests methods to audit this.
Aimed at small business users, the book also lists down
known problems with popular PC hardware, OS and apps, and gives Web addresses from where
you can download required patches. The accompanying CD (which we could not check out)
carries trial versions of various Y2k testing programs.
If you’re not technically-inclined, it’s for you.
The jargon free, non-techie language explains concepts clearly, gives worksheets to
inventory your hardware, and suggests remedies. It also covers legal issues and how to
work out contracts (but with reference to the US A).
But this isn’t bedside reading. There’s lots of
detail. As you’re unlikely to be using all the software covered, the best way is to
skip much of it. Read the first section, which explains the problem and gives a general
overview of how to go about tackling it. Then choose the sections that concern you.
As this is an area with new patches and fixes coming almost
every day, a Website with links to later developments would have immensely added to the
value of the book. Also, the CD could have carried some of the patches mentioned, which
would have made the book many times more useful, and worth the stiff Rs 1,000 cover price.
