The
ZyXEL Omni is a 56 kbps plug-n-play modem for Win 9x, NT, and 2000. It’s quite
compact. We tested the Omni 56 K for throughputs with connections from various
ISPs. It took an average time of 10 to 12 seconds to connect and gave us stable
connects for long hours. The maximum download speed we got on our telephone
lines was 3.22 kbps.
The modem comes with a detailed user-friendly manual that
helps in installation. The accompanying CD contains drivers and additional
software such as Eudora Pro, Surf Monkey, RealPlayer G2, Viewer for Excel, Word,
PowerPoint, etc. A soft copy of the manual is also available on the CD.
The Omni comes with a warranty period of two years and is
priced at Rs 6,000. Though its performance in terms of throughput and sustained
connects is pretty good, the price is slightly high as it’s a bare-bones modem
without any voice support.
