There have been various iPod models over the years - including the Nano and Shuffle - but their last update was for iPod Touch, which was released in 2007. The first iPod released in 2001 had a capacity of 1000 songs in Mp3 format.

"iPod was a pocket-sized revolution that transformed the music industry and brought happiness to millions – and the spirit of the iPod is still with us today. It was truly a team effort to bring it to life and we are honored to play a part in Apple’s history", said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing in his tweet.

He further said, “Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impact more than just the music industry — it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared."

Meanwhile, the iPod touch will be available for sale till the supply lasts.
