Xiaomi working on pop-up camera phone

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has climbed to success in just few years of time. The company has garnered great response from its smartphones in India and it kickstarted 2019 in a style by launching Redmi Note 7, its first phone with 48MP rear camera.

Xiaomi’s Product Director Wang Teng Thomas has hinted that the company could bring a pop-up camera phone in the near future. The pop-up camera was first introduced by Vivo in its Nex smartphones. Pop-up camera is technically a motorised mechanism fitted inside the phone’s body that pops-up when you opt for selfies.

Thomas did not disclose as to when it will be launched officially.

The company will launch the Redmi Note 7 in India on February 28. The smartphone is expected to come with a 6.3-inch display with water drop notch, glass back and a dual-camera setup comprising of 48MP+5MP sensor, surrounded by a fingerprint scanner.

There will be two variants of the device viz. 3GB or 4GB RAM, and will be powered by octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset with 32GB or 64GB internal memory, respectively. According to the rumours, Xiaomi could also launch a 6GB RAM variant with 128GB of storage.

The Redmi Note 7 was first launched in China and its sale crossed 10 million mark in just a month.

Xiaomi is also planning to launch a high-end model of the upcoming Mi9 that will have 12GB of RAM and will also have a “transparent” back, similar to the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition, added Jun.

The Xiaomi Mi9 Transparent Edition will sport a 48MP primary rear camera (7P lens) with f/1.47 aperture as compared to the 6P lens 48MP rear camera with f/1.75 aperture on the standard model.

Apart from the increased RAM, transparent back, slightly modified rear camera, the Mi9 Transparent Edition is same as the standard Mi9.

The Mi9 will have laser auto-focus including PDAF (phase detection auto-focus) and CDAF (contrast detection auto-focus). The Xiaomi Mi9’s in-display fingerprint scanner is optical, instead of ultrasonic and according to the company, the fifth-generation in-display fingerprint sensor is 25 per cent faster than the fourth-generation sensors.

The phone is also expected to come with a “Sunlight mode 2.0” which will further improve the contrast and optimise the colour display while using it outdoors.
