“Digital presence opportunity” for Indian pros could touch US$ 750m

India has the second largest Internet users in the world and interestingly, the most WhatsApp users by a wide margin. India’s rank in terms of app downloads is also second. The Endurance International Group (EIG) and Zinnov Consulting released the report “The Web Pro Ecosystem: The Catalysts to Unlocking India’s Digital Dividend”, which estimates India’s digital presence opportunity our web professionals (Web Pros) could be in the range of US$ 650-750 million.

According to the report, there are about 75 million SMBs (Small and Medium Business in India), dominated by retail and manufacturing and 70% are digitally influenced. It says that “Web Pros” are playing a key role in the discoverability journey of SMBs”. Web professionals includes: Web designers, developers, digital agencies, IT service providers and any business that helps other businesses get an online presence. According to the report there are about 100,000 web professionals in India.

 The report maps the services of Web Pros across four stages of SMB maturity…

1. Creation of online presence through core services such as website builders, domain name & hosting, SSL and email hosting.

2. Services that help in digital discovery through marketing oriented attached services like SEO (Search Engine Optimization)/SEM (Search Engine Marketing) and social media marketing.

3. Reselling third party apps to improve productivity like office collaboration tools.

4. Custom built web and mobile apps to help SMBs grow.

“The increasing trend in internet penetration, online commerce and cyber security will grow the adoption of services for online presence, digital discovery and productivity applications by SMBs in India,” said Zinnov CEO Pari Natarajan, Chief Executive Officer.

Areas that Web Pros should focus on are digital marketing, web and mobile application development. The report talks of maturity model entering the advanced app based model. Social media continues to be the biggest form of digital marketing with Facebook still on top.
