Epic Games to introduce a kid-friendly Metaverse with Lego

The studio behind the popular game Fortnite, Epic Games, recently announced that it has entered a long-term partnership with global toy-making giant LEGO to build a fun 3D metaverse for children. However, the toymaker duo is yet to share the exact details of what the metaverse will be like and when they plan to roll it out.

Since metaverse became the buzzword, several gaming companies have joined the bandwagon to develop metaverses for hundreds of use cases. The two companies will team up to build an immersive, creatively inspiring, and engaging digital experience for kids of all ages to enjoy together.

The LEGO Group and Epic Games have agreed to three principles that will ensure the digital spaces they develop deliver engaging play opportunities safely:

  • Protect children’s right to play by making safety and wellbeing a priority.
  • Safeguard children’s privacy by putting their best interests first.
  • Empower children and adults with tools that give them control over their digital experience.

Epic CEO and founder Tim Sweeney said in a press release that LEGO has always aimed to capture and foster the imaginative quality in children, and even in adults. For nearly a century they have walked and created a path, and Epic will be adding to it and providing an immersive experience to kids worldwide.

“Kids enjoy playing in digital and physical worlds and travel seamlessly between the two. We believe there is huge potential for them to develop life skills such as creativity, collaboration, and communication through digital experiences. But we have a responsibility to make them safe, inspiring, and beneficial for all,” said Lego CEO Niels B Christiansen.

For Sweeney, the metaverse is an “online playground” where users can play games (like Fortnite), watch movies together on Netflix, etc.
