Has there been a spurt in activities on your app during the COVID-19/lockdown era? Do you see a change in the way games are being played?

Yes, we have seen an overall increase in the number of games played on our platform, number of logins, and brand searches for Mobile Premier League. What the lockdown has done is accelerate an already developing gaming ecosystem. With internet, cheap and fast mobile data and gaming titles and apps for mobile devices, users have all the means necessary to explore gaming and the surges we have seen during the lockdown tell us that they are. We have noticed that users coming onto our platform are playing multiple titles and are trying new games and tournaments.

With increased mobile usage and compute power, how do you see mobile games panning out in the post-Covid era?

Interest is only going to increase, and the lockdown has shown us that. Mobile is the most accessible medium for anybody to get into gaming and we expect to see a lot of traction and opportunities in this space for gamers as well as game developers.

What about the whole business of eSports itself. Do you see them becoming more popular in the future? What about virtual World Cups in an era of social distancing and lockdowns?

They are already widely popular. Esports has been around for years and they have had amazing fan followings too. The rapid change we are witnessing now is esports coming to mobiles in a big way and thus going massively mainstream. The Asian Games 2018 had an esports event where India won a bronze medal. So there is interest, recognition, and opportunity already. And it’s only going to grow. Indian game developers are also creating some amazing titles. We recently launched the first Indian-made First Person Shooter game, Rogue Heist, exclusively on MPL, and it’s seeing great traction.

What about the integration of VR into eSports and mobile games. What action can we expect on that front?

It is too early to comment on this at the moment. We will have to wait and watch.

While Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have been brand ambassadors, is there a greater chance of players being more involved in playing virtual sports during downtime at lockdowns?

Yes, with the safety concerns, virtual sports are the most viable option right now as they can be played from anywhere—particularly from the safety of our homes.
