Sony has been continuously criticised for its poor camera performance in smartphone while at the same time the Japanese tech giant provides its imaging sensors to its competitors. Struggling to revive its phone business, Sony’s top execs has promised that things will change for the company for its mobile and imaging businesses are now under a single roof. Sony is working on a new Xperia smartphone which is reported to come with 6 cameras – four in the back and two in the front. Currently, Nokia 9 PureView is the only phone that has a penta camera setup at its back.

The Xperia smartphone is expected to come with a 10MP selfie camera on the front paired with a 0.3MP ToF camera. At the back, the Xperia will have sensors aligned vertically in two rows including a 20MP sensor with an f/2.4 aperture, a 48MP sensor with a variable aperture of f/1.2 and f/2.4, and a 16MP unit with an f/2.4 aperture. Additionally, there will be an 8MP sensor with an f/2.4 aperture, a 12MP camera with an aperture of f/1.2 to f/2.4, and a 0.5MP ToF (Time of Flight) sensor.

There are no other additional specifications of the upcoming Xperia phone. The camera specs were revealed by Max J. on Twitter, a popular leaker that has earlier leaked many other smartphone details on its feed.

Max J. further clarifies in the tweet that the final product could differ in terms of hardware placement and specifications as the device is still in development.

The integration of so many cameras in a single device sounds excessive, but Sony wants to prove to its worth to its competitors that the company can fight in the premium smartphone space. However, asking for an extra amount of money for additional cameras, might be a struggle for its fans for putting faith in Sony.
