Due to the pandemic sports have taken a backseat and now the only sports being played are esports. Many traditional sports companies improvised and organised gaming tournaments, like NBA organising a charity 2K tournament with professional NBA stars or EPL organising a FIFA 20 tournament. Even motosports jumped in. But in a rather unfortunate but an amusing incident for the Formula E organisation, one of their professional drivers Daniel Abt, who drives for Audi, was found cheating. It was found that instead of him, it was a professional gamer and sim racer, Lorenz Hoerzing.

According to BBC, Belgian ex-F1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne, who stood first in the race, became suspicious when Abt played without turning his camera on. According to The Race, after the organisers of the Formula E tournament, Race At Home cross referenced his IP address, they found out that it could not have been Abt who was at the wheel. He later apologised, saying: “I would like to apologize to Formula E, all of the fans, my team and my fellow drivers for having called in outside help during the race on Saturday.

“I didn’t take it as seriously as I should have. I’m especially sorry about this, because I know how much work has gone into this project on the part of the Formula E organisation.

“I am aware that my offence has a bitter aftertaste, but it was never meant with any bad intention.

“Of course, I accept the disqualification from the race. In addition, I will donate 10,000 Euros to a charitable project.”

It has also been reported that Audi has suspended the driver. In a statement, Audi said, “He directly apologised for this on the following day and accepted the disqualification.

“Integrity, transparency and consistent compliance with applicable rules are top priorities for Audi – this applies to all activities the brand is involved in without exception.

“For this reason, Audi Sport has decided to suspend Daniel Abt with immediate effect.”
