Qualcomm the benchmark maker in the smartphone chipset segment announced that it will be bringing 5G network and 120Hz refresh rate in the mid-range segment with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 line of processors. This will be a game-changer in the 5G revolution. As of now, only the high-end flagship processors of the 800 series have the 5G capability but that is about to change with the new 600 series processors.

Along with support for 5G, the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 series processors will also allow smartphones to record video in 4K HDR. The new smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 690 will also have a 120Hz refresh rate with FullHD resolution support. When it comes to camera the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 will be able to handle up to 192MP still images. The snapdragon 690 also brings with it the new Qualcomm quick charge 4+, Bluetooth 5.1, and WiFi 6.

The 5G modem in the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 is the X51 5G modem which supports sub-6Hz and download speeds of up to 120Gbps. The snapdragon 690 also will support LPDDR4x RAM. The new fifth-generation Qualcomm AI Engine in the snapdragon 690 now has improved by almost 70% compared to the fourth generation.

“With over 375 5G designs launched or in development to date using Qualcomm Technologies’5G solutions, we are driving the proliferation of 5G across multiple tiers to make the next generation of camera, artificial intelligence, and gaming experiences more broadly available,” said Cristiano Amon, President, Qualcomm Incorporated.

“Driving the expansion of 5G into the Snapdragon 6-series has the potential to make 5G accessible to more than 2 billion smartphone users around the world,” Amon added.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 chipsets will start appearing in the mid-range smartphone in the late part of the year. So we don’t yet know the pricing of those smartphones but we hope that they will be as competitive as their 4G cousins. Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 is going to the successor to the Snapdragon 670 processor.
