What is aptX and how does it work?

As wireless earphone with Bluetooth audio are becoming  becomes more and more popular, you may now find “aptX” appearing on more products. aptX is also an compression algorithm like mp3, only difference being that mp3 uses psychoacoustic modeling to take out data, wherein aptX uses time domain ADPCM. Digging deeper aptX uses fewer bits per sample and reduces the required bandwidth for a given signal-to-noise ratio making files smaller while retaining quality.

aptX technology must be incorporated in both transmitter and receiver to derive the sonic benefits of aptX audio coding over the default sub-band coding (SBC).

Performance

To review the performance we paired the Blu-200 with iPhone 5S and it was easily recognized by it. Two devices can be paired with the speaker simultaneously, allowing you and a friend to switch between music on your respective devices without having to re-pair each time. The headphone also maintained the healthy connection between the range of 10 giving you the freedom to to move around, no more long cables or tangles.

On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like DJ Magic Mike’s “Feel The Bass,” the headphone pumped out appreciable amount of oomph and detail and sounded much better than Blu 100 due to extra driver size. The mid and treble ranges are well-defined, and surprisingly, the vocals sound crisp and clear, even at low volume levels.

On tracks like Titanium by David Guetta which features dance club style beats, the speaker produced high fidelity sound with attacking bass and oomph, and sounded booming and bright making this melody truly pleasurable from starting to end. Sia’s vocals were clearly audible in between the bass of this electric pop song. Even when you are listening to orchestral tracks it sounds clear, with higher register strings, bass, and vocals maintaining their presence in the spotlight.

The microphone worked well with calls and we faced no drop out during testing. Your listening experience will be enhanced if you have an aptX compatible device.
