Samsung is looking to bring a new variant of Galaxy A70 – the Galaxy A70S that could be world’s first smartphone to come with a 64MP rear camera. The South Korean giant recently introduced two new 0.8-micrometer (μm) pixel image sensors – the 64MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 and the 48MP ISOCELL Bright GM2. The company is looking to bring the Galaxy A70S with the 64MP one.

According to Samsung, the GW1 uses the pixel-merging Tetracell technology and remosaic algorithm to produce bright 16MP images in low-light environments and highly-detailed 64MP shots in brighter settings. To further top things off, the GW1 sensor supports real-time high dynamic range (HDR) of up to 100-decibels (dB) that provides richer hues. For what its’ worth, the dynamic range of a conventional image sensor is at around 60dB, while that of the human eye is typically considered to be around 120dB.

The GW1 incorporates a Dual Conversion Gain (DCG) that converts the received light into an electric signal according to the illumination of the environment. This conversion allows the sensor to optimise its full well capacity (FWC), utilising the collected light more efficiently especially in bright environments. The sensor can also support full-HD recording at 480 frames-per-second (fps).

The Samsung Galaxy A70 launched earlier in India comes with a 6.7-inch full-HD+ Super AMOLED display, a 32MP front-facing camera. The smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 SoC clubbed with 8GB of RAM. At the back, it features a triple rear camera setup consisting of 32MP low-light lens with f/1.7, a 8MP ultra-wide lens with a 123-degree field of view to enable users to capture both ultra-wide images and videos and a 5MP depth lens to capture bokeh effect images.

While there are smartphones already available with 48MP sensor, Samsung with its 64MP sensor in Galaxy A70S wants to control the market share that it lost to Xiaomi, Oppo and OnePlus in the past few years.

The Galaxy A70S is expected to launch in second half of 2019.
