Sony has a new PlayStation 5 now and it looks like a machine from the future. Sony revealed the design of the Playstation 5 in the gameplay reveal event. The new console looks futuristic with a sleek design. It’s clear that Sony has invested a lot in the looks and aesthetics of the new Playstation 5. It almost looks like the Playstation 5 has a white outer shell and a black internal core that is being protected. Sony showcased the console standing upright in a horizontal position and that is for a good reason. We don’t yet know it the Playstation 5 will come on other colors but a matt black edition would be a welcome move. Sony revealed two versions of the PlayStation 5. One with the blu-ray disc player and one without it. The console without the blu ray player is called the digital edition.

Seems like Sony is going the same route that Microsoft did with the X box by launching a completely digital model of the Playstation 5. Players will be able to download and store games either on the drive of the console, on their external hard disks, or on the cloud. This could be a move to save costs by Sony but since we don’t know the pricing of the console yet we can’t say for sure. The lack of a disc drive does make the Playstation 5 digital edition look sleeker so maybe the exclusion of the disc drive was a design choice by Sony.

When it comes of the console itself we don’t know the IO or the port selection on the back of the Playstation 5 but from the reveal, we can see that the front of the console has a USB type-c port and a USB port and two physical buttons on the disc variant of the PlayStation 5. One is for powering on the console and the other is probably to eject discs. Both versions of the Playstation 5 will have the same internals as far as we know. The only difference is the lack of a disc drive on the digital edition.

When it comes to the internals of the console the Playstation 5 is packing some serious firepower. Sony is using an AMD processor that is based on the ZEN 2 architecture with 8 cores clocked at 3.5GHz. The GPU is a custom RDNA 2 which has 36 CUs at clocked at 2.23GHz and 10.28 TerraFLOPs. For storage, Sony is using a custom SSD with 825GB of space. Though the amount of storage players get is still unknown. There is 16GB GDDR6 memory Ram on board to make the console super fast and snappy. Both consoles are expected to come out around November of this year.

When it comes to games announced for the Playstation 5 on the event there are a lot of them with the notable ones being:

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Gran Turismo 7
  • Godfall
  • Horizon: Forbidden West
  • Oddworld: Soulstorm
  • Resident Evil 8: Village
  • Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online PS5
