As a start-up, UrbanClap had an extremely simple and open network, which was beginning to have problems as the business grew. The network was difficult to manage and was plagued by latency issues. As a result, despite having a high bandwidth of about 150 Mbps, the network was not scalable and the user experience was not up to UrbanClap’s expectations.

In late 2015, when the company was drawing up plans to upgrade its head office, it decided to deploy a new networking solution that would be able to scale to meet the growing demands of the business, while addressing latency issues to improve the user experience. The new network also had to be reliable and easy to manage with plug-and-play support for wired and wireless connectivity. And, it had to be secure from Day 1.

Technology Solution For the new 800-1,000 seat office, Juniper proposed a solution based on a core network of Juniper Networks EX4300 Ethernet Switch with a 320 Gbps Virtual Chassis backplane and a 40GbE backbone offering full duplex uplink connectivity between the core and access networks. Virtual Chassis technology allows multiple interconnected EX Series switches

to operate as a single, logical device, reducing operational expenses and simplifying management.

The access layer is comprised of Juniper Networks EX3300 Ethernet Switch with Virtual Chassis. It provides 10GbE connectivity to the core and 1GbE connectivity to users. The EX3300 is also able to support networked devices such as telephones, video cameras, and wireless LAN (WLAN) access points with Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities.

The solution was technically a step ahead of other proposals from the competition, which did not have a 40GbE port solution for the same segment and also had fewer backplane and 10GbE uplink port options.

Solution Benefits

The Juniper Networks solution supports converged data, voice, and video over a single infrastructure with prioritization of voice, video, and multiple layers of traffic. This enables the company to make full use of rich communications and media capabilities to enhance its customer engagement and outreach.

Performance needs are well taken care of with 40GbE backbone connectivity at the core and 10GbE at the access level, delivering up to 100 Mbps connectivity to each user. Security requirements have been met with security risk management that integrates UAC to help the EX Series switches dynamically deliver network protection, guest access, and identity-based quality of service.
