YouTube is developing new conversational tools that can respond to inquiries regarding the video you are viewing, as well as new generative AI capabilities that can summarize and classify comments based on subjects.

AI-powered chat tool

YouTube is designed for those who want to learn more about the content they consume. YouTube has introduced a new conversational AI tool that lets you ask questions about content and get answers from the video. It can also make recommendations for related content without interrupting gameplay. For academic videos, a new AI-powered generator tool can create a quiz.

YouTube comments Summarizer

Generative AI-powered chat can be accessed by tapping the “Ask” button that appears on select videos, allowing users to ask questions about the video in the same way you would ask ChatGPT. Currently, the new feature is available to a “small subset” of YouTube users.

The new feature is currently limited to the US, and the company says it will roll out to more YouTube Premium members on Android devices in the coming weeks. 

AI summarized Comments

The Comment Summary feature categorizes comments on long videos by topic, making it easy for content creators to quickly jump into conversations and get inspired to create new content.  YouTube says that topics are based on posted comments and do not include information about comments that are considered moderated or contain blocked worlds.

Authors can also delete  individual comments that fall under a topic. But the trial version is currently only available for some users and  not available for all videos.

Comment Summarizer

New features available to YouTube Premium members are available in the YouTube Experiment Center and require user consent. In addition to these creative AI-powered features, YouTube also appears to be testing a new “play something” button on the mobile app that, as the name suggests, will play a random video when you’re not sure what to watch.
